History of creation
In 1985, a competition for the best stadium project was announced in Stockholm. The best idea was recognized as the work of the Swedish architect Svante Berg. He developed the Stockholm Globen-Arena project, as well as Globen City. Construction lasted about three years:
- September 1986 - solemn laying of the structure;
- October 1986 - the beginning of construction;
- June 1987 - half of the frame was erected;
- September 1987 - almost the entire spherical dome was built;
- 1988 - completion of the Globen Arena;
- February 1989 - the opening of the Arena.
In 2009, the Swedish telecommunications company acquired the rights to own the Globen Arena, which has since become known as the Ericsson-Globe.
Design and interior of the Arena
The spherical dome of the Globen Arena in Sweden is constructed from 48 steel columns of curved shape. For the inner shell of the sphere, lattice aluminum was used, and for external finishing - thin metal lacquered plates having a thickness of 140 mm. They were laid out exactly on the inner aluminum grate. The dome is supported by aluminum pipe-poles.
The indoor area is used for concerts, as well as hockey competitions.
In 2010, from the external southern side of the Globen Arena, a special SkyView lift was installed, on which visitors can climb to the top of the sphere. Two semicircular cabins with panoramic glazing, a capacity of 16 people each, move along parallel tracks. From the top of the dome you can see magnificent views of the Swedish capital, which can be captured on a camera or video camera.
