How to give a baby a breast?

Breastfeeding is the process of close contact between the mother and the baby. Breastfeeding is of paramount importance for the health and immune system of the child, and also has a positive effect on postpartum processes in the woman's body.

It is very important for the first time after delivery to correctly attach the baby to the breast - this will help to avoid many problems in the future. Often, young inexperienced mothers have no idea how to properly give a baby a breast and a pleasant procedure of intimacy with a baby turns into a daily torture.

The basic concepts of the correct application of the child to the breast:

  1. Mom should be comfortable and comfortable - this is the first rule of successful feeding, because an uncomfortable posture, tight hands and back will lead to an interruption of the process and unnecessary injury to the breast. When a convenient arrangement is accepted, and the child is ready to eat, we have his head at the breast in such a way that the nipple is almost at the tip of the baby.
  2. In the child's wide open mouth, you need to direct the nipple so that it touches the sky, while the baby must not only grab the nipple, but also almost completely the alveolus around it. Alveolus is a dark circle around the nipple; when feeding it, it should almost always be in the mouth of the baby from the bottom, and slightly look up from above.
  3. Breast is better to support by hand - four fingers from below and a thumb from above, slightly pressing down in the middle of feeding. At first, supporting the breast with a hand helps the mother more accurately put the breast to the child's mouth and fix it. Over time, when the nipple's skin becomes hard and experience appears, you can leave the gland without support, if there is no discomfort. Use the grip with two fingers, the index and the middle, it is not recommended - the fingers often slip to the base of the chest and squeeze a small area around the alveoli. Thus, milk access to the child is limited.
  4. With proper feeding, the baby's chin is pressed to the chest, the lower lip is turned out, and the spout can lightly touch the breast. In this situation, the mother does not feel pain, and the child effortlessly becomes saturated and falls asleep.

If the child does not take the breast correctly, the woman runs the risk of injuring the tender skin of the nipples, and with the following feeding, the cracks and wounds will only worsen. Sometimes, breast trauma is so painful that breastfeeding has to be stopped.

Considering the above, the young mother should go to the maternity hospital for help, and the child's doctor or midwife will show how to give the baby a proper breast. There are also various special courses on breastfeeding, where a specialist can be invited to the house. Also on the courses are classes, which are told in detail and demonstrate how to give the baby a breast correctly and painlessly.

A young mother is often concerned with the question of whether her baby is saturated during feeding and whether he is starving. How much time a child should sucking the chest depends on the weight of the baby and his needs. In the first month the child usually gorges for 15-20 minutes, then sweetly falls asleep. With a shorter feeding time, a situation is possible where the young will often require breast, perhaps even every 30-40 minutes. To avoid this, Mom should try not to allow feeding for less than 10 minutes, and gently pull the sleeping child behind the heels or spout.

After the first month of effort, the process of breastfeeding, as a rule, is being adjusted, which allows mother and child to experience minutes of emotional contact in love and harmony.
