Modern beds are equipped with comfortable spring mattresses. The height of these mattresses is significant, so the traditional bed sheet, which is a rectangular canvas, to make the bed uncomfortable. Stretch sheets perfectly retain their shape, tightly fitting a high mattress, and do not slip during sleep. But the size of the available sheets on the elastic band usually meet European standards, so often do not fit the parameters of the mattress. Yes, and the cost of such a sheet is much higher than the usual bed linen . Many women who can sew, wonder: how to sew a sheet on an elastic band with your own hands?
How to make a sheet on an elastic band?
For tailoring is selected fabric, specially produced for bed linen. Its width is 2.3 - 3.0 m, and you can purchase such material in shops offering home textiles. If the width of the selected material is less than necessary, then the two strips of fabric are sewn with a linen suture.
Most of all, natural hygroscopic fabrics such as linen, cotton, bamboo, some types of blended materials are suitable for the sheet. If you like soft fabric, then you can choose a slightly stretchable cotton jersey, flannel or terry material. Moreover, the fabric that has a stretching does not require an allowance for shrinkage, but if a natural material is chosen, it should be added in addition to the required dimensions of 10 cm due to the fact that the fabric will certainly sit down after washing.
You will need:
- fabric according to the size of the mattress + 20 cm in length and width;
- sewing machine;
- accessories for sewing;
- elastic, equal in length to ½ perimeter of the mattress.
Sewing sheets on elastic band
- If natural cloth is chosen, it must be decapitated: wet in hot water, dry and iron thoroughly.
- The pattern of the sheet is made directly on the fabric, since the design is the most elementary, with a minimum number of lines. 10 cm on each side-allowances for fitting the sides of the mattress and for the "kuliska" for the gum.
- Matter is swept in the corners to the depth of the mattress. The resulting product should be tried on. If the sheet corresponds to the dimensions, the corners are sealed with a double seam. Should be a kind of cover.
How to sew a rubber band to the sheet?
There are 4 ways to fix the gum.
In the first case, the edges of the fabric along the perimeter are bent, and elastic bands are sewn on top.
In the second case - along the whole perimeter of the product a seam with a hem is made - "kuliska". With the help of an English safety pin, the elastic band is pushed into the "kuliska", its ends are neatly secured.
The first two ways are good for easy execution, but ironing such bed linens is inconvenient. Mistresses with good sewing skills can apply the third option - the elastic band is attached only to the corners of the product. At each angle you need about 20 cm of rubber (total: 4x20 = 80 cm).
- The edges of the material are bent by ironing, the corners are swept.
- In each corner, a rubber band is inserted into the tissue folding and is swept.
- The corners with the elastic band are sewn on the sewing machine.
The fourth way is to secure the clamps at the corners. Clammers are original straps made of elastic tape. If you want to get an additional fixation of the bedding, then add cross-clasps. With the third and fourth versions of fastening the rubber bands, you can reduce the bed turn by 5 cm. If several products are sewn, the savings will be quite substantial.
The sewn sheet will allow you to sleep comfortably on the mattress, as it will not get lost even with a restless sleep. The children's sheet on the elastic is made similarly in accordance with the measurements taken.
