International Day of Peace

The problem of instability and the emergence of armed military conflicts as society develops has not completely disappeared from our life, as many science fiction writers dreamed, but, on the contrary, turned into one of the global problems of the new millennium. Many countries continue to build up their military capabilities, meaning future clashes, while others are already involved in armed confrontations. In order to draw attention to this problem, the International Day of Peace was established.

The history of the International Day of Peace

War invariably leads only to negative consequences for the standard of living, the economy and the political situation of the state involved in the conflict. Not to mention the death of soldiers and civilians, the need to leave their homes for a large number of people.

The world community is simply obliged to draw attention to this problem. In 1981, the General Assembly of the United Nations established the International Day of Peace for this purpose, which was decided to celebrate annually on the third Tuesday of September. On this day, numerous events were organized to promote the peaceful resolution of conflicts, and this date was considered a day of silence, when the warring parties had to lay down their arms for a day and understand how peaceful and secure the existence is better than armed struggle.

In 2001, the date of the holiday was slightly adjusted, or rather - a single date was determined for the celebration of the Day of Peace, which was not tied to the day of the week. Now the International Day of Peace is celebrated on September 21.

Events for the International Day of Peace

The celebration of this day has a special ritual and solemn program, which is held at the Headquarters of the United Nations. The Secretary-General of this organization strikes a symbolic bell, which marks the beginning of all events. Then follows a minute of silence, dedicated to all those who died in military conflicts. After that, the report of the President of the UN Security Council is heard, which reports on the current problems that are already present and are only coming to a head military confrontations, offers options for dealing with them. Then there are various solemn events, round tables on the most pressing issues of international security. Every year, the Day of Peace has its own theme, which reflects one or another serious problem related to the war.

In addition to the events at the UN, rallies, commemorative celebrations and other public gatherings aimed at peace are also held around the world, as well as memories of all the casualties among the civilian population and the military who have ever suffered in the course of armed confrontations.
