Ismena - planting and care

Many onion perennials please us with their beautiful flowering. Among them there are more traditional plants in our gardens (gladiolus, hyacinths or crocuses ), and such unusual plants as, for example, ismena. What is this perennial flower and how to properly care for it, read on.

Ismena (and, more correctly, the name of the ismene from Latin) is a plant from the family of the Amaryllis and the genus Hymenocallis (which is why this flower is often confused with the amaryllis and hymenocallis themselves, although these three flowers have significant differences in terms of both botany and floriculture) .

The flower of the phenomenon has an exotic appearance with unevenly located petals. Usually they are white, but pink and light yellow hybrids can occur. This flower is a bit like a lily or some sort of orchid. It looks like a carved bell with a chic "crown" of 6 petals with seemingly torn, jagged edges. Blossoming is a pleasant vanilla flavor.

The plant itself is large, with long leaves (up to 50 cm) and even longer peduncles.

Planting and caring for the flower

Before you put the bulb on the ground, it must be warmed. To do this, in the early spring, in March, take the corms out of the place where it spent the winter, and identify it on a warm window sill. So before planting, it will receive enough heat to further develop flower buds. It is possible to provide an earlier flowering of flowers by growing flowers on a window sill, in a pot. In this case, the bulb should be deepened to the ground by 2/3.

In early May, the test can be planted in the open ground. To do this, separate the "children", if any, and deepen the bulb into the moist soil of the wells 2-3 cm from the sprouting sprouts. If the spring was dry and there is little moisture in the ground, pre-pour the well well with water. Also it is desirable to put a little river sand to protect the bulbs from decay.

Care of the is just as simple as planting it. Before the appearance of green water springs irrigation should be carried out moderate, then - abundant provided good drying of the land in the hole. A sufficient amount of moisture and nutrients is a guarantee that in June the changes will please you with their graceful flowers. Water it until the end of summer. As for the "children", it is better to germinate them on a separate bed - for a season these small bulbs will grow to quite "adult" sizes.

Later in the autumn, until the first frosts came, bulbs are being dug out and stored in a cool (up to + 10 ° C) room (for example, in a cellar). Another variant of wintering is the shelter of a flower in its permanent place with a thick layer of fallen leaves or peat.
