Planting irises in spring

The beauty of blossoming irises amazes, and if you add to this their unpretentiousness, it becomes clear why these flowers can be seen in almost every dacha section. Irises are perennials, they easily hibernate in the open ground. Shoots in plants are generative (peduncles) and vegetative (underground roots of annual links). One flower spike can give up to eleven flowers. It depends on the variety. The rhizome can be friable, filamentous or cordiform. By the way, rhizomes of irises improve the soil structure. Reproduction of irises is carried out and vegetatively, dividing the rhizome into links, and seeds. The latter method is used primarily for breeding hybrid varieties. If you plant iris vegetatively, the flowers will appear in the first year. When planting seeds - in two to three years.

Preparing for planting

Planting of irises is carried out in spring and autumn. In spring, planting irises with bulbs was successful, it is necessary to prepare the planting material from autumn. To do this, wait for the moment when the flowering of the plant will end. During this period, the flowers wither, and the roots and green mass continue to grow actively. Miss the moment - the plant will die or not have time to take root. If you are interested in planting irises in the spring, it is recommended to plant them in late March or early April. Plant later than June, then the flowering plant will see next spring. By the way, in irises the most magnificent flowering is observed in the third year.

Before planting bulbous irises in the spring, it is necessary at the end of September, when the vegetative cycle is completed, to select the largest and most developed shrub, dig it and shake it off the ground. With your hands or with a knife, divide the rhizome into fragments so that each one has a leaf beam and at least one year's link (preferably two). Shorten the roots of the mother's bush by one-third, and remove the old links that are withered. All the dried and damaged leaves cut, and cut the green half. After that, disinfect the rhizome for fifteen to twenty minutes in a slightly-potted solution of potassium permanganate. Then in the sun, dry them, and dry sections are treated with pounded coal and sulfur (mix them in a ratio of 1: 1). In such a condition in a cool dark place, store the rhizomes until spring.

Rules of landing

And now about how to plant irises in the spring. First prepare the soil in an unearthly area, digging and loosening it. Experienced gardeners recommend to sift the soil. If you treat the soil with herbicides, in the summer season, rid yourself of the need to often weed the irises, removing the weeds. You can make fertilizer and compost in the soil, but irises feel great and without feeding. If you used fertilizers or herbicides, then you can plant irises only in a month. Prepare pits (no more than 10 centimeters deep) by making a small mound in the center. On this mound lay the rhizome, gently straighten the roots to the sides and fill the hole with ground. Pour well water. Observe the recommended scheme for planting irises: between two plants the distance should not be less than half a meter, between rows - not less than 70-80 centimeters. Note that when planting different varieties of plants must be planted so that the dwarfs grow in the front row on the south side, medium-sized - in the central, and tall - in the rear.

It is easy to care for irises . The plant is not exacting to soil, fertilizing. In a hot period, irises can be watered. Without watering, they will not perish, but they may lose their decorativeness.
