Jostedalsbreen


In the western part of Norway, the Jostedalsbreen National Park is located. Its frequent visitors are foreign tourists and mountaineers.

Glacier in the park

The unusual name of the attraction comes from the two words "Jostedal" and "bre". The first - the name of the former commune, the second in translation from the Norwegian - glacier, which is mentioned here is not accidental. It is in the territory of the National Park that the largest in the country glacier Jostedalsbreen rises (in another translation - Jostedalsbreen). Its highest point is the peak of Högst Breakulen, located at an altitude of 1957 meters. The area of ​​the glacier is 487 square meters. km, the thickness is 600 m, the length is 60 km. The glacier exists due to heavy snowfalls and has about fifty armful brethren. In recent years, the ice mountain has decreased in size due to warming, but temperature anomalies have opened farms that absorbed the glacier in 1750.

The park was founded in 1991, at the same time the glacier of the same name was included in its structure. Today the territory of Jostedalsbreen has increased significantly and has about 1310 square meters. km. Among the main attractions of the national park are the following:

  1. There are many mountains in the park, but the highest peak is the Lodarskap peak (2,083 m), conquered in 1820 by Gottfried Bohr.
  2. There are also lakes here: Auststalsvatnet, Stiggevatnet.
  3. The park also has museums : the Norwegian Glacial Center, the Norwegian Glacier Museum, the Center in the Jostedalsbreen National Park. The museum of glaciers is considered the most informative and interesting, in it you will be told about the role played by glaciers in the life of the planet.

The plant world of the park is represented by frost-resistant pines and small bushes. In such severe conditions, bears, elks, deer inhabit.

Where should I go on an excursion?

The most visited places of the Jostedalsbreen National Park are the Briksdalsbreen and Nigardsbreen glaciers . The first is convenient to visit from May to October, the second - in July-August. Both places are characterized by picturesque landscapes: ancient bridges, boiling waterfalls , mountain and glacial lakes.

How to get there?

It is possible to reach the sights only by private car or taxi, since there are no routes of any public transport here.
