The beginning of history

The park of the Rio Pilcomayo received its name in honor of one of the deep rivers, near which it is located. At the beginning of the XX century, at the peak of the rainy season, the river went far beyond its shores, flooding almost the entire vicinity. Thus, lakes and swamps were formed, which are preserved to the present day. This incident strongly influenced the development of flora and fauna. Near the marshes began to appear new inhabitants, as well as plants. In 1951, the terrain received the status of a national park, and a number of state organizations oversees the preservation of the natural world.

Park flora

The Rio Pilcomayo is conditionally divided into 4 zones:

Each natural area is striking in its beauty and uniqueness. Despite the fact that the natural environment of vegetation is maximally preserved in the park, you will find many equipped, civilized places for travelers: observation platforms, bridges, etc.

Lakes and swamps

In the southern part of the park there is a large lake Laguna Blanca , which was formed due to the high water level of the river. Between the lake and the river there are several small swampy areas, which, like islands, share the park. The swamp part can be crossed by wooden bridges and paths. The largest marsh is Esteros Poi.
