Lake Chungara


One of the highest mountain lakes of our planet is in the national park Lauka , in northern Chile , 9 km from the border with Bolivia. Lake Chungara, Chile is equated with one of the wonders of the world, this stunning place in the remote corner of the country beckons with its mysterious beauty and special conditions of the high mountain climate. In the Aymara Indians, the name "chungara" means "moss on stone," which indicates the harsh climate of these places, where except for moss and lichens, only a few species of plants grow. The lake is located in the mouth of an extinct volcano and is surrounded by several snow-capped peaks. More than 8000 years ago, as a result of another powerful eruption of the Parinacota volcano, part of the crater was blocked by the release of magma. Over time, the hollow was filled with water, and a lake 33 m deep formed.

What to see on Lake Chungara?

Most days of the year on the lake there is clear weather, which provides ideal conditions for observing the surrounding nature and beautiful reliefs. From the shore of the lake you can enjoy a panoramic view of the city of Parinacota and the surrounding volcanoes. Lake Chungara is a must for all tours to Arica also because of its unusual flora and fauna. Beautiful Chilean ducks and flamingos, various representatives of the camel family - alpacas, vicuñas and guanacos do not differ in timidity and allow people to close range. In the waters of the lake are several varieties of catfish and carp, which can only be seen here. The wetlands surrounding the lake are full of life. In order to join this feast of life, you can stay overnight in one of the small houses specially prepared for guests, or break the tent near the water. For lovers of outdoor activities, climbing to the top of volcanoes and hiking in the surrounding area are organized.

How to get there?

All excursions to Lauka National Park , to Lake Chungara start from Arica - the center of the Arica-and-Parinacota area. You can get to Arica from Santiago or any other airport in the country for two to three hours. Further the route will run to the west, towards the Andes mountain chain. The nearest cities to the lake are Parinacota (20 km), Putre (54 km). Fans of ecotourism are better off using car hire services.
