Cathedral of Puno


Puno is a small town located in the southeast of Peru on the shore of Lake Titicaca . It was founded in 1668 by King Pedro Antonio Fernandez de Castro. And a year later, the foundations of the future monumental cathedral of Puno (Catedral de Puno) were laid.

History of the Cathedral

The architect and designer of the building was Simon de Astra. Construction lasted more than a century and was completed in 1772. As a result, a grandiose structure appeared before the inhabitants of the city, in the architecture of which harmoniously intertwined features of the Baroque style and national Peruvian motifs. Unfortunately, in 1930 the fire destroyed an impressive part of the building and the relics stored there.

Peculiarities of the cathedral

The main feature of this cathedral in Peru is the simplicity of interior decoration and a huge amount of light and space inside. All this gives visitors a sense of freedom. The main decoration of the temple are paintings made in different techniques and styles. Remarkable here is the altar of Emilio Hart Terre. The facade of the cathedral is decorated with figures of sirens and people.

Puno is 300 km from Arequipa - one of the largest cities in Peru . The cathedral is located on the Plaza de Armas, near the information tourist center, where you can reach the rented car . Also, the cathedral is easily reached on foot, walking around the city.
