The main attraction of the Norwegian city of Trondheim is the Nidaros Cathedral - a church in which the rulers of the state have been crowned for a long time.
Historical reference
The construction of the cathedral began in 1070. It was not accidental that the place was chosen: it was here that the monarch Olaf the Sacred is buried, who died in 1030. The construction of the temple was prolonged, its doors were opened for believers only in 1300. Nidaros Cathedral survived not one fire, it was often rebuilt and restored . The last renovation of the church lasted more than 150 years and ended in 2001. Today the shrine is visited by more than 40 thousand pilgrims. They are attracted not only by the greatness and power of the structure, but also by the religious relics that are stored here.
Architectural solution
The Nidaros Cathedral in Norway harmoniously intertwined Gothic and Romanesque architectural styles. One of the facades of the building is decorated with images of kings, revered saints, Jesus Christ. The oldest part - the Chapel of St. John (1161) - sings the Saints John and Sylvester. The main value of the chapel is the marble altar - the work of sculptor Harald Warwick in 1985. Another notable place of the cathedral is the front part of the main altar, which depicts scenes from the life of St. Olaf. The church crypt keeps an invaluable collection of tombstones of the Middle Ages. Many of them were made in the XII century. and have ancient inscriptions in Latin and Old Norse. Also here are portraits of some deceased.
Musical Instruments of the Cathedral
It is noteworthy that ancient bodies are installed in the Nidaros Cathedral. The first is made in the Roman-Gothic style and dates back to 1930. The organ was produced by the musical company Steinmeyer and first sounded for the general public in honor of the anniversary of the Battle of Stiklestad. Today, the tool is located in the west wing of the church. The second organ reflects musical instruments of the Baroque period. It was produced in 1738 by Johann Joachim Wagner. This body is equipped with 30 pipes, while his brother has 125.
