A bit about Hammershus

Hammershus (date: Hammershus) is the largest defensive fortress in northern Europe, found on the territory of Denmark in the northern part of the island of Bornholm. The year of its erection is considered to be 1250, but the founder is definitely unknown, presumably it is one of the archbishops of the city of Lund. But there is a version that in that place the crusaders of Voldemar II were based. The fortress is located at an altitude of 74 meters above sea level.

What to see?

From the fortress Hammershus offers a beautiful view of neighboring Sweden and the severe Baltic Sea. The southern landscape stretches far along the plain, sometimes diluted by small lakes and woods. Near the fortress there are two fresh water reservoirs, from where water was taken for the needs of the garrison. Hammershus around the perimeter is surrounded by a protective wall, which closes the huge round tower. The length of the perimeter is 750 meters. Inside the wall, rings of fortifications were built to hold the invaders as long as possible.

On the territory of the fortress, for more than 20 years, the Asger exhibition has been functioning, where you can see pictures on medieval themes, models of houses and knights' camps, interesting situations from the life of past centuries, grand dresses of the Middle Ages.
