Church of St. Barbara

One of the oldest Russian churches in Switzerland , the Orthodox Church of the Holy Great Martyr Barbara, is in Vevey . The initiator of the construction and the main sponsor was Count P. P. Shuvalov. His daughter, who, incidentally, also bore the name of Varvara, died during childbirth at dawn of her days, just 22 years old. Shocked by the huge loss, the Earl decided to build a church in memory of his dear daughter.

The church bears the name of St. Barbara, the defender of all those who were killed by violent means and patroness of people with deadly professions.

Features of building architecture

The author of the project was the Russian architect IA Monighetti (his father was from Italy, but lived and worked in Moscow). The church was built in 1874-1878; headed this process J.-S. Kezer-Dore. Surrounded by a green garden and a stone wall, the structure is a single-domed white-stone church in the North Russian style, which was common in the 17th century.

You can select two cubes that are the foundation of the building. The largest stands out with a large number of carved posts, beautiful windows and arches. The small one is crowned with kokoshniks, on which the drum is based. In turn, the drum is framed by columns with glazed spans between them. The facade of the building is very colorful, it is carved with carved decor. The interior is made up of old icons and frescoes. They are the main sights of the church. In 2005, the church moved a number of restoration works.

For reference

Even before the erection of a modern temple, the city of Vevey was one of the favorite resorts of the Russian aristocracy and intelligentsia. Count P.P. Shuvalov once rested here with his wife, he was here calmly and well, as if at home. Upon learning of the death of her daughter, who, dying at childbirth, took the new baby Mary to the world, the count decided to create a memorial church in one of the most beloved cities.

Now the church is in the jurisdiction of the Western European Diocese of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia (ROCOR). Regularly in the temple services are held, which are in Russian and French.
