This institution as the National Gallery exists since May 8, 1999. Founded it according to the program on national and cultural development of the population, which was launched in 1960. The preparation and restoration of the building was carried out by the Minister of Culture and Education named Fuad Hasan.

Before that, the building housed the Indian residence, which was built in a colonial style. Materials for the erection of the building were taken on the ruins of Kasteel Batavia (Batavia Castle). At the beginning of the 20th century, there was a female hostel here. At the same time, additional buildings were built for the training of students.

Over time, the headquarters of the youth union and the infantry brigade were located here. The Department of Education and Culture was able to regain the building only in 1982. He immediately began to use for a variety of exhibitions.
