History of the museum

The idea of opening a modern Armed Forces Museum in the country, telling about the role of the army in the development of the country, belongs to Nugroho Notosusanto, a professor of history at the University of Indonesia. To place the exhibits, the Bogor Palace was first considered, but this project was rejected by the President of Indonesia, Haji Mohammed Suharto. Then it was decided to re-equip the Visma Yaso building, built in the 1960s for the president's wife, Devi Sukarno. To remake this house in Japanese style began in November 1971. Almost a year later, on the Day of the Army, on October 5, 1972 the museum was officially declared open and began to receive the first guests. At that time only 2 dozens of dioramas were placed in it. After 15 years, another pavilion was built. In 2010, the Museum of the Armed Forces of Indonesia was included in the list of cultural assets of the country.
