Gunung Merbabu


Gunung Merbabu is a national park , founded around a sleeping stratovolcano, It is located in the central part of the Indonesian island of Java . The picturesque mountain is perfect for hiking and climbing. The reward for travelers climbing to the top is a luxurious landscape that encompasses several mountains and towns at their foot.

General information

The height of the volcano Gunung Merbabu is 3144 m. Its name is translated from the local dialect as "mountain of ash". So it was called by far ancestors, who witnessed the strongest eruptions. Vulcanologists are aware of two eruptions - in the middle of the 16th century and at the end of the 18th century. Today, Merbabu is in a dormant state and is a famous tourist attraction in Indonesia .

Gunung Merbabu, together with the adjacent territory, is one of the national parks of Indonesia, it was founded in 2004.

Visit to the park

Tourists go to Gunung Merbab exclusively for the sake of traveling through the mountains. The local tourist center offers several routes. They are of average complexity, so they are available even for poorly trained beginners. If this is the first ascent, you will be given detailed instructions and will prepare for all the difficulties. Some routes start from one side of the mountain, and end on the other. Thanks to this you can see Merbab on both sides.

One third of the mountain is covered with trees and shrubs, but the closer the summit becomes, the less. Since 2000 m the trees are no longer there, just grass. Therefore, shelter from the winds and the sun will not be easy.

How to get there?

Gunung-Merbab is located 24 km from the large city of Salatiga. They are connected by the road Jl.Magelang Salatiga, along which you can reach the volcano in 50 minutes. If you are coming from the south, you need to move along the route number 16, get to the road Jl.Lkr.Sel.Salatiga and turn to it. After 20 km it will take you to Merbabu.
