National Theater of Manuel Bonilla


In the capital of Honduras you will find a large number of different monuments of architecture and art, but the National Theater of Manuel Bonilla occupies a special place in them. It is located in the historical part of Tegucigalpa, on the south side of the small shady Park-Herrera.

History of creation

The National Theater of Manuel Bonilla was opened to visitors in 1915, during the reign of President Francisco Bertrand. The prototype was the Ateni-Comique Theater in Paris, but thanks to the works of the Catalan architect Cristobal Pratz Foneloz and the artistic painting of the artist from Honduras , Carlos Zúñiga Figueroa, the building acquired distinctive features and stands out clearly in the architecture of the city.

The very idea of ​​building a theater here belongs to several amateur activists from the world of literature and art. They formed a committee and in 1905 asked Manuel Bonilla to establish a theater in the capital in honor of the Spanish writer Miguel de Cervantes, whose unforgettable creation "Don Quixote" was then 300 years old. By presidential decree construction was started on April 4, 1905 and lasted 10 years.

What interesting things can you see in the theater of Manuel Bonilla?

Several halls, a loggia, a gallery and a foyer testify to the uniqueness of the building. The facade of the building is made of pink stone, with a design of the renasentist, and the living rooms are decorated with Honduras landscapes and medallions. A lot of lighting devices - 18 conventional lamps, 14 flashlights, as well as 5 beautiful decorative spiders on ceiling plates and lamps made of Murano glass.

For all of its existence, the building of the National Theater of Manuel Bonilla has undergone several restorations to always welcome its guests in a ceremonial way.

Several theater troupes often perform on the streets and the Francisco Morazán square.

More than 10 thousand musical, theatrical and opera productions have already been performed in the theater itself. Special events are often held here, for example, awarding annual National prizes to scientists, artists and literature.

You can move around Tegucigalpa by public transport or by taxi. The theater is 15 minutes drive from the main square of the city, Plaza Morazan.
