History

The grand opening of the memorial took place on June 28, 1924, shortly after the end of the First World War. Twenty years later, the municipal authorities paid tribute to the memory of those who died in the Second World War: a sign was inscribed on the monument, and the complex itself was consecrated repeatedly.

Memorial complex today

One of the most picturesque squares in the city. In the center of the park stands a 13-meter column of white Portland stone, crowned with a carved frieze with four heads of lions in the corners. At the base of the column is a sculptural ensemble of several human figures symbolizing the desire to live and protect, at the very top of the pedestal is a big angel. Below on the bronze boards you can read the names of the dead heroes and the names of the army regiments.

Four alleys lead to the column along which lanterns and comfortable benches are installed, beautiful decorative trees are planted. In the evening, the park is effectively highlighted.

Annually on November 11, the Day of memory of those killed in the First World War, official ceremony of laying flowers at the monument is held, in which the first persons of the country take part.
