Rhodes Island - tourist attractions

If you want to plunge into the world of antiquity and spend time, where at every step you can visit an interesting place, feel free to go to Rhodes. Practically all the sights of the island of Rhodes are shrouded in legends or described in ancient works. Not for nothing that the famous Agatha Christie in the book "Rhodes Triangle" chose this place for action. The charming warm sea, the bright sun and the special atmosphere in every memory remain forever.

The Colossus of Rhodes

This is one of the ancient wonders of the world, which portrayed the wealth and power of Rhodes. It was this building that stood the least of its time and reached us only in stories and descriptions.

Where was the Colossus of Rhodes? Concerning the arrangement, there are two main opinions. According to the first hypothesis, the famous statue stood on the seashore in the harbor. Almost everyone knows the image, where, like an arch, stands Colossus of Rhodes with widely spaced legs. This variant of location is more popular, but it has no historical or even indirect evidence.

Another hypothesis as to where Colossus of Rhodes is located suggests a different location. Colossus was a god of Helios, and therefore his statue was to be near the temple of the same name. One way or another, but to this day only conjectures and assumptions have survived.

Palace of the Grand Masters on the island of Rhodes

In the course of history in Rhodes, the walls of the palace of the Grand Masters were repeatedly destroyed and reconstructed. After the Turkish siege in 1480, it was restored by the Grand Master Pierre D'Obüssson.

The building acquired its present appearance in 1937. It was restored by the Italian authorities. Today from the palace of the Middle Ages there were only some parts of the outer walls. There is a museum and exhibited archeological artifacts, which were brought from all the surrounding islands and from all over Rhodes.

The Rhodes Fortress

Among the sights of the island of Rhodes, the fortress is considered to be one of the most important. In the Middle Ages it served as the main defensive structure and was the residence of the Grand Master of the Rhodes Order. Today it is a museum and one of the monuments of architecture, which was listed in UNESCO. At all times, it was there that the main defensive forces were concentrated.

The Temple of St. Panteleimon in Rhodes

The temple is located in the central part of the village of Siana. It is located on the slope of Mount Akramitis. The church was erected from huge blocks, which were connected with leaden staples. Nearby there are two towers with a clock. The interior impresses with its splendor. On the huge vaulted ceiling is the image of Christ, the walls are decorated with gilding. There is also a gilded bishop's chair and an iconostasis. In the temple there are particles of the holy relics of the healer Panteleimon.

Rhodes Acropolis

On Mount Monte Smith are the ruins of the ancient Acropolis. It is famous, first of all, by the ruins of the temple of Apollo of Pythia in Rhodes, the huge Pythian stadium and the unique marble amphitheater.

It was there that Cicero studied at the time. Although the old antique beauty has faded noticeably, the construction of the amphitheater has remained the same. This place is popular among tourists. There you can plunge into the atmosphere of antiquity, make a photo of the memory near the rostrum.

Temple of Aphrodite on the island of Rhodes

The temple is in the historical part of the city. Its dimensions were relatively small. The structure itself is a temple with a colonnade, oriented to the west and east. Today, the ruins of an ancient building are only reminiscent of ancient Rhodes and tourists are happy to visit these places.

Rhodes Lighthouse

One of the defenses of the city is the fort of St. Nicholas. It is located at the end of the mole, which was built in the era of antiquity. Initially, this place was called the Mill Tower. After the Turkish siege the fort was fortified with a moat and a wall, and now there is a lighthouse.
