Sablin caves and waterfalls

In the suburbs of St. Petersburg, there are many beautiful and interesting places that everyone should simply see: the Alexander Palace in Tsarskoe Selo and the famous Peterhof, and many others. One of such objects, which can be attributed to the most interesting places in the world , is the Sablinsky nature reserve. On its territory are the famous Sablin caves and waterfalls, which, let and thanks to the man, are nevertheless a very successful and beautiful creation.

The history of the Sablin caves

The caves, as we have already said, arose artificially. Dug them in the late XIX century, in order to extract the sand used in glassmaking. After the workers finally left the Sablin caves, they fell into the hands of nature, which took care of their appearance.

In 1976 the territory of the Sablin caves was recognized as a reserve, and a little later they carried out a number of works on ennobling and strengthening the caves and adjoining territory.

What can you see?

On the territory of the Sablinsky Reserve there are 2 waterfalls, 6 open caves, accessible to visitors and 2 caves with littered entrances. We think that we will not surprise you if we say that there are rivers in that area, with beautiful beaches and clean streams.

So, we studied the surrounding geography, now we pass to the caves themselves. The names were given to them because of their external signs. For example, the Cave of Three-Eyes got its name because of the three entrance holes, and the Pearl Cave on the ceiling has limestone deposits reminiscent of pearls, incidentally, pearls were found in these caves earlier.

And of course, in many caves there are beloved and fascinating icicles from stalactites and stalagmites, along which glass beads slowly drip water droplets. Agree that this is an intriguing spectacle, especially if one thinks that all this miracle is created not in one day, but is accumulating over the years.

The temperature in these caves is always stable + 8 °. There hundreds of bats await the winter, sometimes butterflies fly, which sleep in winter, covered with small droplets of dew, on a white stone. By the way, both those and others are forbidden to disturb, this is watched closely by local guides.

Left bank cave

About Levoberezhny cave I would like to tell you separately, tk. it is the largest and most interesting. Entangled labyrinths exceed 5.5 kilometers. And on its territory there are 3 underground lakes, the depth of which in some places reaches 3 meters.

Another feature of this cave are beautiful halls that have unusual fairy titles: the Two-Eyed Hall of the Underground King, the Cosmic Hall, the Red Cap's Hall and others. There is also a cat's lazy, which you can go through only lying down, holding your hands along the body.

How to get to Sablin caves and waterfalls?

Now, when we told you the peculiarities of these reserved places, it remains to answer the main question: "Where are the Sablin caves?". Not so far away, just 40 km from St. Petersburg. You can safely by car or train, if you choose the second option, carefully look at the tickets, not all flights stop at Sablino. Leaving the train you can take a bus, or you can walk on foot, the distance is only 3.5 km.

Just keep in mind that you should not get into the Sablin caves yourself, as their labyrinths are very confused and for beginners can be dangerous. And it should be said that many of these programs are designed not only for adults, but also for children.
