Scintigraphy of the kidneys is a modern diagnostic method. It consists in functional visualization. During the procedure, not a large number of radioactive isotopes are introduced into the body. They emit special radiation, through which the image of the organ is constructed.
Radionuclide scintigraphy of the kidneys
Special gamma cameras are used to teach the image. The pictures that are displayed on the screens help to determine various pathologies of the kidneys. The study is of two types:
- Static renal scintigraphy results in a very clear image of the organ, along which it can determine its size, shape, position, condition of the parenchyma, as well as the rate of absorption of the drug. Typically, a static study is carried out as an additional, to clarify what is seen on X-rays. The main drawback of it is that the picture does not provide an opportunity to assess the functional changes in the organ.
- Dynamic kidney scintigraphy monitors the functionality of the kidneys. During the procedure, several shots are taken after the same amount of time. Thanks to this as a result, a specialist can get an idea of the performance of the genitourinary system.
Nephroscintigraphy is done not only to assess the work of the kidneys, but also to monitor the effectiveness of treatment.
Indications for radioisotope renal scintigraphy
Due to the fact that the study involves the introduction of a radioactive preparation into the body, too often it can not be carried out. The main indications for nephroscintigraphy are:
- impaired renal function;
- reflux;
- complications after the transplant operation;
- hydronephrosis (in the second and third stages);
- suspicions of oncology;
- abnormalities of organ development;
- blockage of the urinary tract.
Preparing for kidney scintigraphy
Although this is an effective diagnostic procedure, it does not require special preparation. All that a patient needs is to be mentally prepared for the fact that an isotope will be injected into his skin and warned if a similar survey has been conducted recently. And immediately before the study - go to the toilet to empty the bladder.
The duration of the procedure depends on its type. Static nephroscintigraphy takes no more than half an hour. Dynamic examination is more serious, and it will have to be spent from 45 minutes to one and a half hours.
