Social deprivation

Social deprivation is a lack of communication or the inability to communicate with other people for one reason or another. The strength and consequences of deprivation depend on who initiated the isolation: the person himself, society or circumstances.

How is social deprivation manifested?

Social deprivation can manifest itself in different ways, depending on a number of factors:

  1. Partial social deprivation . Partial deprivation occurs when a person for one reason or another does not have social contacts with the people necessary for him or has them in insufficient quantity. Such deprivation occurs in children who are brought up in boarding schools, from pupils of military schools, from prisoners and other groups of people. With such deprivation, a depressive state, drowsiness , decreased efficiency, loss of interest in life can occur.
  2. Complete deprivation. It can be caused by circumstances: a shipwreck, a collapse of rocks in a mine, a loss of orientation in the taiga. Under such conditions, deprivation occurs very quickly, it flows violently and if a person does not provide qualified assistance in time, it can lead to death.
  3. Age of the person . In childhood, a person may not feel the influence of deprivation, but the lack of necessary social contacts affects his mental and intellectual development. The older a person becomes, the more difficult it is to tolerate forced isolation.
  4. The person himself chose isolation or was in it for one reason or another . If a person decides to leave society or restrict contact with him, the manifestations of deprivation will be minimal. When forced isolation can be observed depressive states, neurotic and mental disorders.
  5. The nature of man . The stronger the personality , the more resistant it is in critical situations.

The consequences of social deprivation

The sooner a person receives qualified assistance from specialists, the more chances are that the consequences of social deprivation will be minimal. However, in some cases it is not possible to completely get rid of the consequences of social exclusion. So, social deprivation of orphans leads to the fact that these children do not form the correct patterns of behavior in the family, children grow up with a sense of rejection and low self-esteem, they do not know how to form and maintain close relations.

The most severe consequences may be deprivation, caused by circumstances, catastrophes, natural disasters, when a person finds himself in unaccustomed conditions. In such situations, the lethal outcome and the appearance of mental illnesses are caused not by the circumstances themselves, but by the person's mental reaction to them.
