The Batik Museum


Batik Museum opened in 2013 and is located in Georgetown , in a three-story mansion. His exposition is designed to demonstrate the history of batik in Malaysia . Here are presented new works, and already received fame. Works are made on textiles, rice paper and silk.

What is a batik?

Hand painting on the fabric using special compositions to obtain clear boundaries of the image is called batik. Such compounds are called reservoirs. It can be paraffin or some kind of rubber glue. Batik is an Indonesian word, which means a drop of wax. The technique of batik is based on the fact that the reserving composition does not pass through the paint. Thus, if you well limit the shape of the figure, you can draw on the fabric.

Malaysian art of batik

Batik and ceramics are two kinds of art that Malaysia is famous for. In Georgetown, the batik museum is one of the main attractions. Although Malaysians learned this technique from Indonesians, they are now considered the leading masters. The Batik Museum tells the story of the origin of this art form and its subsequent development. It all began in the middle of the last century. Artist Chuah Tean Teng, who was familiar with the technique of batik, saw the possibility of using his talents to create works of art. Despite the fact that at first glance everything looks simple, it took him several years of intensive experiments, until he achieved success.

The first exhibition of batik was held in 1955 in Penang , where the artist lived. Then there were exhibitions in other cities, and connoisseurs adopted a new kind of art known as the Batik Painting. There were new talents, whose works are now also exhibited in the batik museum.
