Foundation of the museum

The emergence of the museum is associated with the name of the famous historian Georges Groslier, who not only collected a huge collection of historical objects, but also participated in the creation of a project for the building of the National Museum of Cambodia. The construction of the museum began in 1917 and ended two years later. After five years, the area of ​​the building was expanded, as the number of exhibits increased and there was nowhere to place them. During the reign of the Khmer Rouge, the museum was closed.

The most valuable exhibit of the museum's collection is an impressive collection of Khmer sculpture, which occupies four halls. The first exhibit is part of the statue of the god Vishnu, which was found during excavations in the first half of the XX century. The head, shoulders, both hands of the deity remained safe. Another exhibit worthy of notice is the ship of monarchs, which served as a means of transportation along the Mekong and Tonle Sap rivers, the latter originating in the famous Tonle Sap lake , which is also considered one of the country's sights. The casket, which was used to store leaves of the betel plant, will be amazing. It is made in the form of a bird with a human head and refers to the XIX century. Useful information for tourists

The National Museum of Cambodia is open for visits daily from 08.00 to 17.00. The cost of an adult ticket is $ 5, children under the age of 12 are free. You can save a little by joining a group of tourists, then the payment will be $ 3. The only drawback is the ban on photo and video shooting in the museum and its immediate vicinity.
