The Old Port of Tel Aviv

The old port of Tel Aviv is located in the place where the Yarkon River flows into the Mediterranean Sea. Its construction was caused by the fact that the country began to have difficulties with the used port in Jaffa, which was controlled by the Arabs. The construction of the new port took 2 years. Namal is considered one of the attractions that tourists seek to see.

What is interesting about the port?

The port appeared as a result of Israel's struggle for independence. In the 30s of the XX century, most of the ships entered the port of Jaffa, but on October 16, 1935, local Arab dockers, when unloading a Belgian ship with cement, found weapons. Machine guns, rifles and cartridges were intended for the Jewish underground organization. As a result, an Arab strike broke out, and the work of the only cargo port was paralyzed.

Since the supply of products by sea was extremely important for the Jewish community, it was decided to build a temporary port on the northern outskirts. In it, on May 19, 1936, a ship arrived, which delivered cement, without which it was impossible to begin even construction. A crowd of people, who were waiting on the beach, rushed to help the dockers with unloading. It is interesting that the first bag of cement can be seen to this day at the pier.

When a new port was built in Ashdod in 1965, they forgot about Namal. The ships stopped coming here, and this remained until the nineties of the 20th century. It was restored and breathed new life into it. Former hangars for ships have been repaired, restored and converted to nightclubs, bars, restaurants. Now the old port is one of the favorite places for both Tel Aviv residents and tourists.

The port is interesting not only for the nightlife, early in the morning, the adherents of a healthy lifestyle run around on wooden decks, and also ride bicyclists. Namal is ideal for walking with children, you can not worry about the safety of the kids, because the port is banned from entering the cars.

It is interesting to visit the port on Fridays, when the market of organic products opens. On it you can buy any vegetables and fruits that are grown in environmentally friendly conditions. On Saturdays there is an antiques fair that works all day. The old port takes guests in the evenings, when restaurants open their doors to visitors.
