Wagar Airport

On the Faroe Islands, tourists will not find sandy beaches and azure sea. Recreation here belongs to the category of exotics: fans of sea fishing, hiking and picturesque nature go to Faroes (which is only one lake Sorvagsvatn , famous for the whole world!). Here you can admire the unusual and very peculiar landscapes and just relax from the hectic megacities. On the islands, a measured life flows, which attracts tourists, eager to plunge into the atmosphere of peace.

The most popular mode of transport on the archipelago is considered to be a waterway: between the islands ferries run. But with the outside world, the Faroes are also connected by air communication: there is a large international airport Vagar, the only one on the islands.

Airport Features

Vagar was built during the occupation of Faroe Britain. Then it was used for military purposes, and after the war was abandoned for two decades. Serviced civil flights the airport began in 1963. At the beginning of the XXI century, it began to be modernized - in particular, the runway was enlarged, which allowed to receive A319 type airbuses, and put into operation a new terminal. Now the capacity of the port is 400 thousand passengers.

Vagar is the base airport for the national carrier of the Faroe Islands - Atlantic Airways. In addition to the main regular and charter flights to Europe, it also provides domestic flights. Vahar is connected by helicopter communication with the islands of Frooba, Skuva, Stoura-Doymun, Koltur, Hattarvik, Svujnoi, Michisnes and Chircia. Company helicopters fly to the largest Faroese cities of Torshavn and Klaksvuyk.

Waiting for the flight at the airport you can pass the time by visiting the duty-free shop. There you can buy clothes and accessories, perfumes, tobacco and alcohol products, souvenirs , as well as various confectionery products. Also in the terminal building there is a comfortable waiting room, several cozy cafes, a storage room, a medical center, ATMs. Here you can rent a car from one of the two competing companies. And very convenient is the presence in the airport of a room for passengers with children, the use of which is free. There you can put the child to sleep and take a nap yourself, prepare baby food or regular food, if necessary, call the pediatrician on duty.

How to get to Vagar Airport?

Tourists from Denmark and Iceland, Greenland and Great Britain, Norway, Spain and Italy fly to Vahar International Airport on the Faroe Islands. You can get to Farer by buying a ticket for one of the regular flights. At the same time, we note that the Faroe Islands are not included in the Schengen area, so a special mark on a Danish visa is required for their visit. You can get it at the embassy or the visa center in Denmark, which is available in any major city.

Arriving on the island of Voar, where the airport is located, you can easily reach the capital of Faroe, the city of Torshavn on the island of Streimoy. In addition to the traditional ferry routes, these two islands are connected by a 5 km tunnel overland, dug in 2002. The bus runs between the capital and the airport (flight activity is 6: 00-22: 00, 40 minutes on the way, ticket costs 110 crowns), and the city can be reached by taxi, which will cost 5-6 times more.
