Main Attractions in Odense

  1. Cathedral of Saint Knud . This building was built in the XVI century and it is known, above all, thanks to its history. The unique interior of this cathedral with a gilded carved altar and paintings attracts tourists from all over the world.
  2. The Fün village is an open-air museum where you can admire the architecture of an ancient city, stroll through narrow paths past peasant houses, get acquainted with the life of the inhabitants of Odense XVIII-XIX centuries.
  3. A model of Odin's tower . The tower itself was built in 1935. At that time it was the second largest tower after the Eiffel. But in 1944 the building was blown up by the Nazis, so modern tourists can only see a mock-up in its place.
  4. The Palace of Odense Slot . Previously, in its place was a monastery, which eventually became impoverished. The new life was presented to the building by Frederick IV, who turned it into a mansion. Well, the modern appearance of the building gave Frederick VII. At the moment, the city council is in the building.
  5. Church of St. Hansa , located near the council building. Inside of it, you will most likely be attracted by beautifully preserved tombstones and an ancient Gothic crucifix.

The city of the great storyteller

And finally, a separate large block of Odense attractions, for which the majority of tourists come here, is associated with one of the inhabitants of this city, a man whose fairy tales, written back in the 19th century, still remain loved by many children and adults. It's about Hans Christian Andersen. The storyteller was born in Odense and spent his childhood there. That is why there are so many reminders about him and his work in the city.

Andersen House

The first landmark associated with the name of this creator is Andersen's house in Odense. It you will find on the street Munkemøllestræde. Here the writer spent his childhood, and now the building is a museum dedicated to him. The museum has a lot of Andersen's personal belongings: his books, letters, furniture.

The Andersen Museum

The modern building adjoins the house of Andersen. It houses the main exposition of the Andersen Museum in Odense. There, visitors can immerse themselves in the world of fairy tales, get acquainted with their translations into different languages, see drawings, appliqués on the motif of fairy tales and much more.

Fairy-tale sculptures

Sculptures of heroes of Andersen's fairy tales are scattered throughout the city. Near one of the city's hotels Radisson are the heroes of the "Little Mermaid", "Steadfast Tin Soldier" and "Hans Churban". The author of the monument to the Steadfast Tin Soldier in Odense managed to make his hero seem to have just come down from the pages of the book, so realistic he looks. Opposite the hotel from a large flower looks Thumbelina, and the "paper" boat, made, of course, not from paper, as if swimming forever along the river in Odense.

There are monuments in the city to the author himself. One of them is located behind St. Knud's Cathedral, and the second one is on the central square. A curious story is connected with the second. Sculpture on the idea was to be part of the fountain, but the project financing was stopped and Jens Galshot, the sculptor of this monument to Andersen in Odense, flooded his work in the port of the city.
