World Poetry Day - the history of the holiday

Few people know what day is Poetry Day, and not every resident of our country knows about the holiday itself. Meanwhile, every year on March 21, almost all educational institutions celebrate a day dedicated to poetry, and hold various kinds of events.

Around the middle of the 20s of the last century, American poetess Tesa Webb was the first to suggest this holiday. In her opinion, the date of birth of Virgil was supposed to be the answer to the question of the number of days for poetry. The proposal was received quite warmly and friendly. As a result, October 15 began to celebrate a new holiday. In the 1950s, he found responses not only in the hearts of Americans, but also in European countries.

The 30th UNESCO Conference played an important role in the history of the World Poetry Day celebration, at which it was customary to celebrate this day on March 21. Since 2000, the events for the World Day of Poetry began to be prepared on this date.

In Paris, prepared a lot of speeches and other events, the main purpose of which was to emphasize the great importance of literature in the life of modern man and society and the whole.

World Poetry Day in Russia and other countries of the post-Soviet space is celebrated in the evenings in literary clubs. On such evenings, famous poets, young and simply promising literary figures are usually invited. Many educational institutions from simple schools to universities hold events for the World Poetry Day: open lessons, meetings with interesting figures in literature, competitions and interesting quizzes dedicated to this day.
