The Bale Mountains national park is located in the central part of Ethiopia, in the region of Oromia, among the mountain range with the same name, where the peak is Batu (4307 m above sea level).
History of creation
The Bale mountain park was opened for visitors in 1970. The purpose of its creation was to preserve the disappearance and extinction of rare flora and fauna, primarily mountain niyala and Ethiopian jackal. Over the years of its existence, the reserve has been recognized and has become a popular tourist destination for tourists coming to Ethiopia. Every year, the Bale Mountains national park is visited by more than 20 thousand guests.
What is interesting about the Bale Mountains Park?
One of the main distinctive features of the Bale Mountains reserve is the diversity of landscapes. Here you can see the mountain plateaus, peaks and volcanic formations, alpine lakes and meadows, mountain streams and rivers.
The reserve has a diverse and unique flora with fauna. If you decide to visit the park, you will witness a surprising combination of impenetrable tropical forests, bushes and picturesque green plains. The vegetation of the park changes as the height increases.
In the mountain park of Bale, there are 3 main ecological regions:
- Plains with shrubby vegetation and tropical forests in the north;
- Plateau Sanetti (altitude about 4 thousand meters above sea level) in the center of the reserve - it is here that grow wonderful African-alpine plants, roses of Abyssinia and wild flowers with a delicate and delicate aroma;
- southern forests of Harenne - are characterized by a large variety of mammals, birds and amphibians, many of them endemic.
Among the representatives of the fauna, the most valuable are the mountain nyala and the Ethiopian jackal, which are on the verge of extinction. On the plateau of Sanetti you can see a large group of Ethiopian wolves. Also in the reserve live wild African and hyena dogs, the Syumen fox, unusual large antelopes, black and white monkeys of the Columbus, more than 160 species of birds and other pearls of Ethiopia.
An excursion to the Bale mountain park can be made only with the help of an experienced guide, choosing one of the suggested options:
- by car - along one of the many mountain roads;
- On horse;
- on foot - a variety of trekking trails are laid in the reserve.
Any of the options will open before you the unique beauty and grandeur of African nature and will be remembered for a long time.
How to get there?
You can get to the park of the Bale Mountains by traveling from Addis Ababa by car as part of a tour group or on your own. The second option - to fly to the city of Goba and from there already to get to the reserve.
