Beat Castle

One of the largest and oldest castles in the Czech Republic is Bitov (Hrad Bítov). It is located on the mountain, which rises above the river Zheletavka, near the Vranov Dam. This majestic structure has impressive dimensions and attracts tourists with a rich collection.

Historical background

Bitov Castle was erected on the orders of Premysl Otakar the First from 1061 to 1067 as a border fortification. Originally it was built of wood, but over time it was converted into a stone bastion. The construction was done in the Gothic style and made the center of the region.

In the XIV century, the castle passed into the possession of the Lichtenbergs, who called themselves Panami Bitov. During their reign the territory of the fort was expanded and strengthened. Here built the chapel of the Virgin Mary, 2 watchtowers, a citadel and laid the modern palace.

In the XIX century, the city passed to the Dauno family. The owners built the largest private zoo in the country and changed the interior of the castle. Until now, a huge collection of stuffed animals, lived in the palace at that time.

In addition to the powerful walls and ancient architecture, visitors can stroll along the courtyard, where the church is located, the palace theater and mini-zoo, surrounded by a luxurious park with a fountain. The interior of the structure is also of interest. The corridors of the palace are an intricate labyrinth. White walls are decorated with interior items of those times and illusory painting, and on the ceiling are lamps made of painted sheet metal.

What to see?

During the tour of the castle Bitov you can feel the spirit of the Middle Ages and you will see:

  1. Arsenal of all kinds of weapons. The exposition is a collection of weapons belonging to different epochs. Here is a collection of ancient swords and spears, rifles and rifles, wind pistols and knight armor, belonging to the era of the Crusades.
  2. A collection of stuffed animals , which is famous for the world's largest dog show (51 items). There are also animals, dressed in various clothes and imitating scenes from human life.
  3. Premises decorated with wall paintings. It was created by Czech masters in the Middle Ages.
  4. Prison , each chamber of which is equipped with an awesome set of tools intended for torture. All mechanisms are working. The most famous of them are "Spanish boots" and "gloves".
  5. Wine Vault. Here you can taste local varieties and buy wine.
  6. An ancient tower. It was built in the 13th century and has not changed since then. At different times here were the barracks, the powder storehouse and even the dungeon.
  7. The former brewery , which is decorated with mythical characters: dragons, monsters, basilisks.

Bitov Castle is famous for such events:

  1. The structure belongs to the state, although it was not expropriated. In 1949, the last owner died, and the palace became the property of the Czech Republic . The next of kin was compensated in $ 45 thousand.
  2. Bitov Castle occupies the 4th place in the country in terms of attendance.
  3. In 2001, the palace was added to the list of National Monuments of Culture of the country.

How to get there?

From Prague , you can get there by buses Nos. 108, 816 and 830. They leave from Prague Florenc station. The journey takes up to 5.5 hours.
