Annually in the last days of May in the small resort town of Cannes in France is the International Cannes Film Festival. The place where the Cannes Festival is held is the Palace of Congresses and Festivals, located on the Croisette. This prestigious and very popular worldwide festival is accredited by the International Federation of Film Producers' Associations.
The festival is popular both with the stars of the world cinema, and the film producers, who prepare new film projects, and also sell ready-made works at the festival. Probably, there is no director who has ever made films, whoever wants to create such a tape, which will receive the main award of the Cannes Festival - the Golden Palm Branch.
History of the Cannes Film Festival
For the first time the Cannes Festival was held from September 20 to October 5, 1946. The first festival was supposed to be held back in 1939. It was initiated by the French Minister of Education Jean Zay, the Chairman of the jury appointed Louis Lumiere. The program of this festival included the Soviet film "Lenin in 1918", as well as the American film "The Wizard of Oz". But the festival was not destined to take place: the Second World War began.
The first film, which was demonstrated in the framework of this film festival, was a documentary film, created by director Julius Reisman, entitled "Berlin". Since 1952, the Cannes Film Festival has been held annually in May. The jury of the festival consists of famous directors, critics, actors.
Program of the Cannes Film Festival
Films for the Cannes Film Festival are selected in several stages. These tapes should not be shown on any other cinematic forums, and they should be removed within a year before the opening of the festival in Cannes. A short film should be no longer than 15 minutes, and a full-length film takes more than one hour.

Prize-winners at the Cannes Film Festival
Awards at the Cannes Film Festival are awarded in the appropriate nominations. So, the Golden Palm Branch award the film from the main competition. The second-place film is awarded the Grand Prix. In addition, the best director, script, actor and actress receive awards.
In the nomination "A special look" one film receives the main prize, another one - the jury's prize. In addition, prizes are awarded for the best direction and for a special talent.
In the competition of student films Cinefondation, the nominees are awarded three prizes.
This year the Golden Palm Branch went to the French film director Jacques Odiard for the creation of the film "Dipan". The Hungarian director won the Grand Prix for the debut picture "Son of Saul". In the nomination "Best Director" won this year in Cannes Hou Xiaoxian from Taiwan and his film "The Assassin". The jury awarded with the prize of Yergos Lantimos from Greece and the film "Lobster". The prize for Best Actor was awarded to Vincent Lendon (the film "The Law of the Market"), and the prize for Best Actress was shared by Emmanuel Berko (tape "My King") and Rooney Mara (film "Carroll").
