Annually in the last days of May in the small resort town of Cannes in France is the International Cannes Film Festival. History of the Cannes Film Festival

For the first time the Cannes Festival was held from September 20 to October 5, 1946. The first festival was supposed to be held back in 1939. It was initiated by the French Minister of Education Jean Zay, the Chairman of the jury appointed Louis Lumiere. The program of this festival included the Soviet film "Lenin in 1918", as well as the American film "The Wizard of Oz". But the festival was not destined to take place: the Second World War began.
