Cathedral of Arequipa


The second largest city ​​in Peru is the city ​​of Arequipa . It is famous, first of all, thanks to its architecture and historical center, built of white volcanic stone. There are many buildings here, which, surely, can attract your attention. The cathedral of Arequipa (Cathedrale Notre-Dame d'Arequipa) is one of them.

Historically, data

The cathedral of Arequipa in Peru is considered one of the first religious buildings in the city. Its original version was built in 1544 by Peter Godiness. However, the earthquake of 1583 destroyed the cathedral. The building was restored only by 1590. But this, unfortunately, was not for long. In 1600 the eruption of the volcano again destroyed the structure. Several times the temple was destroyed by cataclysms of a different nature. The last version of the building was built in 1868. By the way, he also had not been sweet. In 2001, an earthquake with a strength of more than 8 points partially damaged the cathedral. One tower was destroyed, some vaults and a nave. The restoration work was supervised by Juan Manuel Guillen.

Distinctive features of the cathedral

That cathedral, which we see now, is built of volcanic stone and brick. The prevailing style in the architecture of this structure is the neo-Renaissance. In separate features of the building, the influence of Gothic is traced. The facade of the building consists of 70 columns with capitals, doors and impressive sizes with side arches. Inside the cathedral the first thing that most likely will strike you in the eye is an altar made by Felipe Maratillo of Carrara marble. Noteworthy here is the wooden chair, made of oak by the artist Busina Rigo.

You can see not only the cathedral itself, but also the exhibits of its museum. It collects a collection of works of art made by the Spanish jeweler Francisco Maratillo. Here you can see the crown of Elizabeth II and many other things presented to the church by Bishop Goyenesh.
