MAS Museum

In the very center of Antwerp, on the bank of the Scheldt River, there is a unique architectural object, which houses the equally unique museum "An de Strom" (MAS). If you want to know more about this port city, then you should visit the historical and ethnographic museum of MAS.

Museum collection

The uniqueness of the museum "An de Strom" is not only in a rich collection, but also in the building itself. It is a 60-meter building in which glass layers alternate with Indian red sandstone. Thus, the facade of the MAS Museum in Belgium is a magnificent combination of the lightness and airiness of the glass with the monumentality of the sandstone.

The interior space of the museum also features interesting architecture. It is as if filled with air and light. The impressive size of the pavilions allows you to place here several collections at the same time. Some of the halls in the museum "An de Strom" work at a certain time, therefore they are often closed. Nevertheless, there is always something to look at. In total, the MAS Museum exhibits over 6,000 exhibits, divided into the following categories:

At the expositions of the museum "An de Strom", you can see amazing relics that relate to the period of pre-Columbian America, the Golden Age, the era of navigation and our days. Among them:

The third floor of the MAS Museum is reserved for temporary exhibitions, which also, in one way or another, relate to the history and culture of Antwerp. Another interesting detail in the museum "An de Strom" is the "decorative" hands, which adorn the facade of the building. So the architects wanted to pay tribute to the feat of the Roman war of Silvius Brabo. According to legend, it was he who cut off the giant's hand to Antigone, who terrorized the locals. Even the city of Antwerp itself was named after this feat.

How to get there?

The MAS Museum is located on the street Hanzestedenplaats between the docks Bonapartedok and Willemdok. You can reach it by public transport - by buses No. 17, 34, 291, following the Antwerpen Van Schoonbekeplein or Antwerpen Rijnkaai stops. Both stops are in 3-4 minutes walk from the building of the museum "An de Strom". In addition, in Antwerp you can travel by taxi or bicycle.
