Basilica of Del Voto-National

Basilica Del Voto-National is not the oldest building in the capital of Ecuador . Its construction began in 1883, but to this day the building is being built and being rebuilt, something reminiscent of the Spanish Sagrada Familia. The style of architecture is neo-Gothic.

Features of the building

The external resemblance to Notre-Dame de Paris is very significant. The Basilica has two high belltowers (115 m), pointed arches and windows, a strict style, only chimeras and gargoyles do not exist. They are organically replaced by representatives of the local fauna - turtles, monkeys, dolphins. This is the largest majestic cathedral of the New World.

The Pope consecrated the building 12 years after the construction began. However, this did not affect the speed of its erection. There is a legend that justifies the endless long-term construction of the basilica - the day the construction is completed, Ecuador will be conquered by another state.

Each stained-glass window of the basilica is unique. At the bottom of each of them are endemic of the local flora, with each plant signed. All this is organically combined with stories from the life of Christ.

One of the best observation platforms

The Basilica of Del Voto-National in Quito is an excellent viewing platform. If you climb to the very top (on foot or on an elevator), the view will open an excellent panorama of the city. Everything is thought out for the convenience of tourists. If you can not get to the observation platform on foot for the first time, you can look into the cafe, take a breath and have a cup of tea or coffee, or maybe a juice made of real tropical fruits.
