The history of the Earth Day holiday goes back to the 19th century. Its founder was a farmer and biologist - Julius Sterling Morton. It was the founder's birthday - April 22 , that was the official day, when celebrate the Earth Day Day throughout the world. Morton could not safely watch how day after day in his home state was mass destruction of trees, which were used as building materials and for heating furnaces. So the biologist came up with the idea to organize a competition in which the winner was expected a pleasant surprise, and for participation it was necessary to plant the largest number of young trees. On this day in the state was planted more than 1 million seedlings. This idea was liked by the senator of the state, who announced the holiday official.

In general, both dates make us think about the future of our planet and about how here and now we can take measures to preserve the ecology of the environment. For a long time, the holiday was celebrated only in the United States, and only in 2009, with the support of fifty countries, a holiday was established - International Earth Day.
