Gunung-Palung


Gunung-Palung National Park is a protected area located in the same-named Gunung-Palung Mountains in the West Kalimantan area of Indonesia . It is one of the most complete national parks on the island: with seven different types of ecosystems representing almost all types of local vegetation. The park is also a priority area for conservation of UN environmental projects.

Flora and fauna

The park is distinguished by a variety of plant species. Here you can see various forests:

In Gunung-Palung live about 2500 orangutans, which is approximately 14% of the rest of the wild population of this subspecies. It is also an important habitat for the richness of other biodiversity: the whitish gibbon, the proboscis monkey, the sanga-panolin and the Malayan lizard.

Research

Inside the national park is the research camp Cabang Panti, created by Dr. Mark Leighton in 1985. Cabang Panti, covering 2100 hectares, is currently conducting a variety of research projects, including the Gunung Palung Orangutan, which began in 1994. Describing the importance of the park, many researchers who worked in Gunung-Palung in the past declared it the most stunning tropical forest.

Tourism

The park has potential for ecotourism, there are many attractive places for visitors. To date, the only way to get permission to enter the park is to pay for the package offered by Nasalis Tour and Travel or one of its partners.

How to get there?

First you need to fly to the capital of Indonesia, Jakarta , and from there, by plane, get to Pontianaka . In Gunung-Palung, it is best to take a taxi or rent a car from the airport.
