What does an irrigoscopy of the large intestine show?

This type of study is suitable for clarifying the diagnosis if the following symptoms are present:

• pain in the anus;
• excretion of pus, blood and viscous mucus with feces;
• bleeding from the rectum;
• pain in the lower abdomen;
• chronic diarrhea or constipation.

Also, the procedure is used for suspicion of developing cancerous tumors.

How is irrigoscopy carried out?

There are two ways to perform the described procedure.

Ordinary irrigoscopy is performed as follows:

1. The tip of the sterile enema is inserted into the rectum of the patient, which is filled with a contrast solution - a barium suspension.
2. The large intestine is filled with this liquid, and its walls are covered with a thin layer of the drug.
3. With the help of the X-ray apparatus several sighting and survey images of the colon are made at different positions of the patient's body.
4. The bowel is emptied, but on the walls of the mucous remains a barium suspension, which makes it possible to perform an X-ray examination of the relief.

This process is completely painless, safe and non-traumatic, and the radiation load at its carrying out is lower, than at a computer tomography. Does not cause complications.

And here's how Irrigoscopy of the intestine with double contrasting is done:

1. The procedure is similar to the classical method for the first two items, only the concentration of barium suspension is higher, so that the walls of the colon are covered with a thick layer of contrast preparation.
2. After filling the bowels with the help of the Boborov apparatus, air is dispensed in order to stretch the walls of the organ. This allows you to explore it and the mucosa in more detail.
3. Further actions are also identical to ordinary irrigoscopy.

Double contrasting is used, as a rule, to diagnose tumors and neoplasms in the large intestine.

How to prepare for the study of the intestine by the method of irrigoscopy?

48 hours before the procedure, experts recommend refraining from eating food that delays stools mass in the intestine (vegetables, fruits, milk, black bread), as well as increase water consumption to 2 liters per day.

On the eve of the study, you need to do the following:

1. The day before irrigoscopy, take 30 ml of castor oil on an empty stomach.
2. Before the procedure, in the evening, drink a special cleansing drug (Fortrans) or put an enema with warm water. Supper is forbidden.
3. On the appointed day, you can relax and have an enema again.
