Markov Monastery

Not so far from the city of Skopje in Macedonia is the village of Markova Susice, in which the look is pleasing not only the endless green forests stretching to the horizon, but also perfectly preserved Markov St. Demetrius monastery, whose age is not less than 671.

The history and the present of the monastery

If you believe the plate that was preserved over one of the entrances to the Markov Monastery, then it was built in 1345 by Vukashin Mrnyavchevich, the king of the Prilepsky kingdom. Already in about 1376-1377 or in 1380-1381 the temple was decorated under the guidance of his son Marco, in honor of which he was named. It is thanks to him that we can now observe a huge number of beautiful frescos inside the building and the overall interior of the building.

Two artists were working on decorating the frescoes and walls, which at one time worked on the churches of the Hospital Mother of God and the Virgin Perivleptos . One of them decorated the south side of the room, and the other - the northern one, while the artists differed sufficiently in the level of drawing skills and it is possible to distinguish their works by eye (the work of the master with a lower level - "Communion of the Apostles" which is in the apse ).

On the territory of the monastery to this day preserved an old mill and no less than an old wooden gate, but could not resist the chapel, which contained frescoes depicting the ruler Volkashin and his son Marco.

Today, the state of the monastery is constantly monitored and even developed, thus a new chapel of the Apostle Mark was built on its territory and a museum in which you can admire the truly ancient elements of the religious culture of this country. In the neighborhood near the monastery grow vineyards, but private, unfortunately.
