Cyprus, Polis - attractions

The policy is located forty kilometers from Paphos . A few years ago, local residents enlisted the support of the authorities and began to develop a tourist business in Polis, but despite this, it has not become a resort resort so far. Perhaps because the city itself is not located on the sea coast, but more than a kilometer away from it. Despite this, Polis is full of amazing sights, so it attracts tourists who want to plunge into history and enjoy the picturesque nature.

Baths of Aphrodite

The most famous sight of Polis is the Baths of Aphrodite . Such an amazing name was given to a half-rock, located at the base of the rock. Water in it is typed thanks to springs and keys, so there it is incredibly clean and, accordingly, cold. However, the water in the Kupalne is always above the knee. This is enough to enjoy pure water and not be in time to freeze.

Like any attraction, the Baths of Aphrodite is accompanied by a legend that says that the goddess of love swam at the source regularly, thereby maintaining its beauty and youth. Once, during the procedures, Aphrodite saw Adonis, who was captivated by her beauty and his feelings were mutual, Aphrodite was also admired by the beautiful young man. The Goddess of Love and her lover spent a lot of time in Kupala.

This romantic story attracts many tourists, especially the female, who certainly want to plunge into the magical waters and get at least some of the beauty of the goddess of love.

The village of Latchi

Another amazing place in Polis is the fishing bay of Latchi . It is full of cafes and restaurants, among which is the Porto Latchi tavern. It is a real attraction of the bay. This is a great place where you can enjoy Greek dishes and primarily from seafood. We advise you to visit Latchi in the first two autumn months, then the heat drops and the weather becomes softer. At this time, the locals are intensely engaged in fishing, so everywhere only fresh fish. But in Porto Latchi always fresh seafood, so when visiting Polis at any other time of the year, be sure to visit the tavern. Moreover, it serves author's meals and snacks, which you will find only here, so do not be surprised that locals come here from nearby cities.

A great place for a snack is Nicandros Fish Tavern and Steakhouse. The menu features dishes from Mediterranean, European, Greek, international and vegetarian cuisine. Also there are fine meat and fish steaks. It is also attractive that many dishes are prepared on the grill. What could be better than a dish cooked on charcoal served in a tavern by the sea?

Once a carob was imported through the bay, but one day the local authorities issued a law banning deforestation and the business declined, and numerous warehouses, no less than 100 years old, were converted into restaurants, taverns and cafes. Therefore, the premises for them are very similar to each other, they are distinguished only by the interior and terraces.

Church of Agios Andronikos

The church was built in the 16th century, at that time in Cyprus the Venetians ruled, so the architecture of the church carries elements of the traditional architecture of the Venetian era. The church became famous throughout the world, when unique frescos were found during the restoration. All this time they were covered with asbestos, so they hid from the eyes of the parishioners.

Since 1571 the island was ruled by the Ottomans, so the Greeks carefully hid everything that could indicate Christianity, and the frescoes found are the creation of the hands of Christian icon painters. Thanks to such a rich history of the church of Agios Andronikos , the temple is the visiting card of Polis.

Akamas National Park

You can enjoy the pristine nature in Akamas Park . He is also accompanied by a legend that Akamas, the son of Theseus, settled on a peninsula near the modern Polis, built a large city. Thanks to Akamas, the peninsula became rich in the most beautiful flora, which attracted ancient people here. They mastered and populated it. After a series of excavations on the peninsula, historians confidently declared that the Greeks, Romans and Byzantines lived here.

To date, the Akamas National Park attracts many tourists, who are captivated by the abundance of amazing plants, some of which are listed in the Red Book. Also on the territory there are many ancient shells that are difficult to see elsewhere, and fragments of ceramic dishes. The park is inhabited by equally interesting animals and birds, among them the turret "Caretta-Caretta", moufflons and griffins of Vulter.

Cypriots idolize the National Park and even created volunteer groups on a voluntary basis, which take care of the flora and fauna. For example, there is a beach in the park, once a year the creeps crawl out to lay eggs in the sand, and volunteers track the masonry, then collect the eggs and send them to the local incubator. In this way they help preserve rare species of reptiles.

Archaeological Museum of Polis

The entire history of Polis is collected in the Archaeological Museum of the city. It was opened in 1998 and since then has not closed for an hour, since it works around the clock. The Cypriots call the Marion-Arsinoe Museum and this is his second name, under which he is known all over the world. The building of the museum is quite traditional, consisting of two halls. They store the most important exhibits from the Neolithic times to the Middle Ages.
