History of creation

Officially, the Museum of Military Aviation exists since 1984. Initially it was a building intended for storage facilities, one of which housed the F3 Malmslätt squadron. In 1989, work was carried out to expand the building, a second exhibition hall appeared, which marked the beginning of the opening of the state museum at the site of the Malmön airbase. In 2010, the museum underwent a grandiose restoration and was significantly increased in size. Currently, the Aviation Museum in Linköping, along with the Army Museum in Stockholm, is part of the state unification of museums of military history.

The collection of the museum includes exhibits of various aircraft, numerous engines, tools and uniforms - more than 25 thousand objects. There is also a research center, a library and an archive, which stores periodicals, personal files and photographs related to military aviation.

The museum presents both old and modern aircraft. On the ground floor of the Museum of Aviation there are fragments of the legendary DC-3 aircraft, which was shot down by the forces of the Soviet Union over the Baltic Sea. This unique exhibit is a symbol of Sweden's defense in a difficult period for her. Also here you can get acquainted with modern models of aircraft such as JAS 39 Gripen or J 29 Tunnan.
