Each state seeks to preserve its history and honor traditions, preserve a fragile heritage for posterity. The most popular and visited museums in the country are:
- The Archaeological Museum of Budva is the largest in Montenegro. It contains the entire history of the ancient city, from pottery and gold coins from the fifth century to personal belongings and everyday objects of the townspeople of the XIX century. The basis of the exhibition is the results of excavations of the ancient necropolis, 2500 artifacts. The pride of the museum is the Illyrian bronze helmet of the 5th century BC.
- The Maritime Museum of Kotor tells of the rich history of the Bay of Kotor. The exposition of the museum presents ship logs and ship cannons, remains of real wrecks, navigational instruments and naval inventory, models of sailboats, flags, portraits of captains and much more.
- The city museum in Podgorica carefully keeps unique exhibits of the Roman and Illyrian epochs. His stands abound with artifacts of archaeological, ethnographic, historical and cultural-historical content. Among the exhibits are many values of those times.
- The city museum of the city of Kolashin keeps a memory of the Turkish conquest and the heroic liberation of the city. Visitors are presented with stands with ethnographic, art and historical collections that cover the whole period of the city's existence.
- The Polytean Museum in Beran represents a collection of archaeological artifacts from different eras, dating back to 2300 BC. The basis of the exposition - painted ceramics, arrowheads, ornaments, copper dishes, stone murals, household items. The museum's collection is constantly replenished.
- The city museum of Perast in the palace of Buyovici acquaints us with the most famous family of seafarers in the country. - The National Museum of Montenegro in the historical capital of the country Cetina unites several museums of different themes:
- The Historical Museum of Montenegro narrates about the pre-Slavic period and the Middle Ages, about the foundation of Montenegro and the times until its withdrawal from Yugoslavia;
- The ethnographic museum of Montenegro , located in the former embassy of Serbia, stores exhibits of clothing, musical instruments, weapons, textiles and food, as well as a huge exposition of national art;
- The Art Museum of Montenegro displays a collection of Yugoslav peoples, a collection of icons, a collection of copies of murals, a collection of Montenegrin paintings and a memorial collection of Milica Sarich-Vukmanovich (canvases by Picasso, Chagall, Dali, Renoir, etc.);
- The Museum of King Nikola presents a huge collection of paintings, weapons, personal belongings of royalty and historical objects of that era, also worth visiting and the royal library;
- The house of Negosh is the former residence of Montenegrin rulers, built by Tsar Peter II Negosh, in which are stored his things and objects of political life, as well as a relief map of the whole country.
