Phnom Temple Yes


Phnom Dar Temple in Cambodia near the province of Takeo is one of the most ancient historical religious sites. The main temple was built approximately in the middle of the VI century by King Ruth Trak Varman. Despite its age, the Phnom Yes Temple has been beautifully preserved, and the area around it and the rock climb are maintained in good condition to this day.

Ascent to the Temple

The most popular religious landmark in the cradle of the Khmer civilization of the province of Takeo is the temple of the Angora period Phnom Da. It is built on a low mountain, the ascent to the upper church takes about 10 minutes. A more gentle version of the climb passes through the observation deck with benches where you can relax and take pictures, and steeper, with railings on both sides cut in the rock steps, starts from the foot of the hill and leads directly to the upper church. The number of steps is about 500, but even elderly people easily pass this route.

Ascent to the top of the mountain passes in two stages: through the lower church with a pedestal in the form of a lotus for incense and through five artificial caves in the rocks. It is believed that they were used as a refuge for hermit meditation or for the installation of ritual symbols and Buddha statues.

Description of the structure

French historians, at the time of their travels, concluded that the base of the temple is made of sandstone, and the walls and interior decoration of red laterite stone, which was brought here specifically for the construction of the temple. The main entrance to the temple faces north, the height of the entrance door is almost 4 m. The temple is square, each side is 12 meters wide and 18 meters high. During the war, Phnom Da suffered, and part of the tower with a peak was destroyed and not rebuilt. Inside the temple, practically nothing has been preserved, now there is a gold table with two meter long golden pagodas and two supports for ritual incense.

On the territory of the observation deck of the main temple, a beautiful view of the rice fields and the province of Takeo. It seems that the sky is so low that you can reach the clouds. On the left side of Phnom Da Temple in Cambodia there are tables and chairs for lunch and leisure tourists.

How to get there?

Temple of Phnom Da is located 12 km from the province of Takeo. The roads are level and practical empty, which allows you to reach the foot of the temple in 15 minutes. Usually, tour guides on the way to the temple bring tourists to the lake, strewn with red lotuses. You can get to Takeo from Phnom Penh by National Highway No.2. The distance from Phnom Penh to Takeo is 87 km.
