National Museum of Kyoto


In the city ​​of Kyoto is one of the most famous art museums in Japan . Founded in 1897, it was first called the Imperial, and in 1952 it was renamed the National Museum of Kyoto.

The building of the museum was built for several years: from 1889 to 1895. The main exhibition hall, called Tokubetsu Tendzikan, was designed by the famous Japanese architect Tokum Katayam. And already in 1966 a new exhibition hall of the Kyoto Museum was opened, the creator of which was Keiichi Morita. Three years later the entire museum complex was declared a cultural heritage of Japan , and the state took it under its guard.

In 2014, the new hall, the so-called Gallery of Collections, was renovated, the author of which was the famous architect Yoshio Taniguchi. Since that time permanent exhibits have been placed in the gallery, and the Main Exhibition Hall is intended for special exhibitions.

The museum exhibits exhibits of traditional Japanese as well as Asian art. The total collection consists of more than 12 thousand items, and 230 of them are considered the national treasury of Japan. Many items were transferred to storage from ancient Japanese temples and even from imperial palaces . In addition to the original antiques, the museum has a collection of photographs on which various masterpieces of Japanese culture and art are depicted.

The entire collection of the National Museum of Kyoto is kept in several buildings. However, the most valuable are the landscape screen (sentsui biyubi) of the 11th century and the Scroll of Hungry Ghosts of the 12th century Hakizyo.
