History of the museum

The National Museum of Contemporary Art of Korea was established in 1969. Today it is a whole museum complex, whose main office is in Seoul, and branches are located in Kwacheon and in Toksugun . The third branch in Cheongju will be opened in 2019. The museum in Kwachon began to receive visitors since 1986. Due to its favorable location and excellent combination of architectural style with the surrounding landscape, it quickly gained popularity among residents and visitors of Seoul.

The National Museum of Modern Art occupies an elegant 2-storey building, built in the style of classicism. Near it there is a garden in which stone sculptures of modern masters are of special interest. Inside the building, you can distinguish the eastern and western wing, in which there are 8 galleries. In the first two there are thematic exhibitions, and in the rest - exhibits on genres.

The permanent exposition of the museum includes more than 7 thousand works of art. Among them there are works of Korean artists (Pak Sugyna, Ko Khidona, Kim Hwangi), as well as masterpieces of artists from all over the world - George Baselitz, Josef Boise, Jörg Immendorf, Andy Warhol, Marcus Lupertz, Jonathan Borowski, etc.

Cost of visit

The entrance to the permanent exhibition of the National Museum of Modern Art in Kwacheon is free.

For visiting all the exhibits presented, you will have to pay 3000 won ($ 2.6). For groups over 10 people there is a discount for a ticket at a rate of 10%. For children, youth and pensioners over 65 years of age, the display of exhibits is free. You can also visit the National Museum of Contemporary Art without payment on the Museum Day, which is held every month, on the last Wednesday.

Every Monday and January 1, the Museum of Modern Art has a weekend. The entrance is closed 1 hour before closing, so be careful.

The doors of the children's museum in March-October are open from 10:00 to 18:00, and the rest of the time - from 10:00 to 17:00.

How to get there?

To get to the National Museum of Modern Art in Quachon , you need to first get on the 4th subway line to Seoul Grand Park station. Then you should use exit number 4, and on the street a few meters from the metro, take the bus that takes tourists directly to the museum building. Buses leave the station every 20 minutes, the journey is free.
