South Korea is an amazing East Asian state that attracts millions of tourists every year from all regions of the globe. Despite the great destruction caused by the Korean War of the 1950s, this country managed to preserve its distinctive culture and numerous historical sights . One of these sacred places can be attributed to the ancient fortress of Samnensanson. Let's talk about it in more detail.
Interesting Facts
The ruins of Fort Samnensanson, located in the central part of the country (Poin province), are one of the oldest historical sights of South Korea. According to researches of scientists, the construction of the fortress dates back to 470 and falls on the period of the Silla kingdom.
Unfortunately, there is no unified theory of the origin of the name "Samnensanson". Some scholars believe that the fortress was named after the city that was nearby, while others maintain that the fort was built in 3 years, and this fact gave a sonorous name first to the sights, and then to the area (in translation from the Korean Sam nyeon - "three years").
Features of the fortress
Fort Samnyansanson for several centuries had a military-strategic importance and performed a protective function. In addition, one of the main tasks of the fortress was the defense of the Han River valley. It is believed that it was thanks to her that the ruler of Theojo could not win in 918.
The size of the building, built in the traditional Korean style of "teimy", testifies to the hard and painstaking work done in those times:
- The length of the fortress wall is, according to various sources, 1680-1880 m;
- width - 5-8 m;
- height - 13-20 m.
It is also worth noting that due to the use of stones of different widths, the wall is sufficiently strong and stable, which allows us today to see the ruins remaining from those times. In addition, the gates were restored in the fortress, 7 bastions with a height of more than 8 m, 5 wells and many others. There was once a pond there, the water from which was used as a drinking water.
At the moment the fortress is an important historical monument of South Korea and can soon be listed in UNESCO.
