Sekhlabateb National Park

Sehlabatebe National Park is an ideal place for a tourist who does not like beach rest, measured walks on asphalt paths and boring gags in beaten souvenir shops. The very location of this park is already pushing for adventure. Do not they excite the imagination of the opportunity to climb the Dragon Mountains , visit the karst caves, get acquainted with the original life of the tribe of the basuto and even live a little with them? It is difficult to imagine that all this can leave indifferent, that's why we would like to tell you more about the Sekhlabateb National Park.

How did it come about?

Despite the fact that officially this park was founded only in 1970, the history of its origin began many thousands of years ago, when there was a tectonic shift of rocks. The tributaries of the Orange River could not break through the basalt and began to erode softer rocks. As a result, there were numerous picturesque canyons and caves, and water-infiltrated mud allowed the valleys to turn into lush meadows that hastened to colonize animals and birds.

Who can I meet?

If you are an inveterate biologist and can not find peace until you see some rare animal, then too, go safely to Sekhlabatobe. Here you will meet such rare birds as the Cape Griffin (it is considered to be a vanishing species), bald ibis, eagle-bearded, vulture, black heron. As for representatives of mammals, here live antelopes, hyenas and foxes. Unfortunately (or happiness), you will not find large predators here. Trout is found in water. And the flora of the park has 250 endemic plant species, so do not be surprised if here you will see something that has not been met anywhere else.

What to see?

Of course, savannas, overgrown with treelike heather, mountain lakes, numerous waterfalls, gorges, karst caves with rock paintings. If you are a fisherman, then there is a great opportunity to catch a large trout, so do not forget to bring a fishing rod. Horseback and hiking routes are developed in Sekhlabat, you can choose any of them at your will and visit local villages with inimitable South African coloring. It will be insulting to be in the park and not climb 3000 m to the mountain pass Mutenberg, from which the amazing view opens. Having traveled along the zigzags of the road of the Sani Pass, you can say, although no, you will not find words to describe what you will experience.

When to visit?

It depends only on you and your decision. But keep in mind that from May to September, snow may fall out here. From December to February, the maximum amount of precipitation falls, so a fog is possible. The average January temperature fluctuates around +25 degrees, and in July - about +15 degrees.
