Snoring - Causes

Snoring is one of the sleep disorders and is observed in a fifth of the world's population aged after 30 years. And men predominate in this list, over 70% of them suffer from snoring. This sound phenomenon arises from the narrowing of the airways and the vibration of the soft tissues of the pharynx.

Why do people snore?

The main causes of snoring can be divided into three categories:

  1. Anatomical, associated with the structure or pathology of the nasopharynx.
  2. Functional, which reduce the muscle tone of the nasopharynx.
  3. Syndrome of obstructive sleep apnea.

Snoring in a dream for men - reasons

It is interesting that the reasons for the appearance of snoring in women and men are exactly the same, although a stronger sex is more prone to this phenomenon. This is due to several factors:

Why a person snores in a dream: a list of diseases

Let's consider in more detail why people snore in terms of anatomical and functional pathologies of the body.

Anatomical diseases:

  1. Polyps in the nose.
  2. Adenoids.
  3. Curvature of the nasal septum.
  4. Enlarged tonsils.
  5. Malocclusion.
  6. Underdevelopment and displacement of the lower jaw.
  7. Congenital narrowness of the nasopharynx or nasal passages.
  8. Excess weight.
  9. The elongated tongue of the palate.
  10. Chronic diseases of the upper respiratory tract.
  11. Consequences of a fracture of the nose.

Functional disorders:

  1. Deficiency of sleep.
  2. Chronic fatigue.
  3. Alcohol consumption.
  4. Menopause.
  5. Reception of sleeping pills.
  6. Smoking.
  7. Dysfunction of the thyroid gland.
  8. Age changes.
  9. Excessive sleep.

Tests for self-detection of the cause of snoring:

  1. To breathe one nostril, closing the second one. If there are difficulties with nasal breathing, snoring can be caused by the anatomical structure of the nasal passages.
  2. Open your mouth and simulate snoring. Then you need to push forward the language, place it between your teeth and again imitate the snoring. If in the second case the imitation of snoring is weaker, then, perhaps, it arises because of the slipping of the tongue into the nasopharynx.
  3. Determine your ideal weight and compare it with the actual value. If excessive weight is present, it can cause snoring.
  4. Simulate snoring with a closed mouth. After this, you need to maximally push the lower jaw forward and try again to snore. If in the second case the intensity of the sound decreased, then snoring can occur due to the displacement of the back of the lower jaw (retrognathia).
  5. Ask people living nearby to write snoring to the recorder. If listening to breathing stops or signs of suffocation, then snoring in this case is a symptom of sleep apnea.
  6. In the absence of results after any of the above tests, it makes sense to consider the cause of snoring excessive vibration of the soft palate.

Why people start snoring - apnea syndrome

The syndrome of obstructive sleep apnea is a serious disease, one of the symptoms of which is snoring. In this case, the upper respiratory tract of the patient periodically close during sleep at the level of the pharynx, and the ventilation of the lungs ceases. As a consequence, the blood level drops sharply. Also, apnea has the following symptoms:
