Social deviation

Social deviation is the social behavior of a person or a group of people, which for whatever reason is significantly different from socially accepted behavior in the society in question. In our time there is both a negative and a positive deviation. Strangely enough, negative deviant behavior is accepted by society as an insult and formal and sometimes not formal sanctions are applied to it. Such, for example, as: treatment, isolation, and even the punishment of the offender.

Types of deviation

  1. Mental and cultural deviations. As we know, sociologists are more interested in cultural deviations, but psychologists are more interested in mental deviations. By the way, the second is still more dangerous. Often, cultural deviations are associated with mental disorders, stipulating this by the fact that people who suffer from alcohol dependence or drug addiction have personal disorganization, that is, mental deviations. Although the deviation of a person suffering from mental disorders is usually not noticeable. Such people often fulfill all the rules and norms laid down in society.
  2. Group and individual behavior deviation. Individual - the denial of the norms of his subculture as the sole representative, and the group - the group deviation from the generally accepted norms. The latter often include adolescents from disadvantaged families.
  3. Primary and secondary personality deviations. Under the primary psychological deviation is understood the prank, which the individual committed once. And under the secondary - a systematic deviation from the generally accepted norms.

Deviation in psychology includes such concepts as: culturally approved and culturally condemned deviations. The former are characterized by the super abilities of the individual, which benefit society, and the latter manifest themselves in the form of extraordinary achievements and activities, usually leading to violation of moral standards and condemnation by society.

Causes of deviation

In the study of the causes of deviant behavior, there are three types of theory of deviation:

  1. The theory of physical types - certain physical features of personality predetermine various deviations from the norms that it makes.
  2. Psychoanalytic theory - the basis of deviant behavior is a conflict that occurs in the mind of a person.
  3. Sociological theory - a change in the internal structure of the personality, which occurred due to unsuccessful socialization in the group.

Perhaps the need to regulate people's behavior within certain norms will always remain relevant. However, do not forget that each person is individual and, without knowing the exact cause of this unusual behavior of a person, do not rush to condemn it.
