Thyroid gland puncture

The thyroid gland is a small organ located on the neck, in front and on the sides of the trachea. In the normal state it is practically not palpable. Among diseases of various organs of internal secretion, diseases of the thyroid gland occur most often. And often such diseases are not manifested or masked by signs of other diseases.

The only symptom that unequivocally indicates a problem with the thyroid gland is a goiter (an increase in its size). The most common and accurate method of diagnosing thyroid diseases is puncture.

Indications for puncture of the thyroid gland

  1. Nodal formations in the thyroid gland one centimeter or larger, detectable by palpation.
  2. Nodal formations in the thyroid gland one centimeter or more in size, detected during ultrasound.
  3. Nodular formations of the thyroid gland less than one centimeter in size, detected by palpation or ultrasound, in the presence of signs characteristic of thyroid cancer.
  4. All tumors in the thyroid gland in the presence of symptoms and data of laboratory tests, with a high probability of indicating thyroid cancer.
  5. Cyst of the thyroid gland.

How do puncture of the thyroid gland?

Puncture is a puncture of the wall of a vessel or some organ for the purpose of taking material for research. Carry out the procedure using a special syringe with a thin needle, as usually the puncture of the thyroid gland is taken without anesthesia. If the use of a thin needle syringe is impossible for some reason, the puncture is performed under local anesthesia. Before the test, the patient always passes blood tests, because without the presence of data on the hormonal background to determine the picture of the disease and the need for the procedure is impossible. Puncture of the thyroid gland takes no more than half an hour (usually less) and it can be done at any time. Preliminary preparation for carrying out this procedure to the patient is not required.

Thyroid gland puncture is usually performed under the supervision of ultrasound - for an unmistakable puncture site.

The ultrasound helps to detect the exact location of the site, the study of which cells is required. If the nodes in the thyroid gland are somewhat, then the puncture of the largest of them is performed.

Puncture of thyroid cyst

The thyroid cyst is a benign formation consisting of a capsule containing a liquid. With a cyst, puncture of the thyroid gland is done not as a diagnostic, but primarily as a therapeutic method, to remove it. But after removal of the cyst, a histological examination is performed to exclude the possibility of malignant formation.

Consequences of a puncture of a thyroid gland

As a rule, the procedure is safe and almost painless. If the puncture is performed by a competent expert under the control of the ultrasound apparatus, only mild pain sensations (as with intramuscular injection) and local hemorrhages at the puncture site are possible. Any direct contraindications for there is no procedure.

Possible complications in the implementation of puncture of the thyroid gland include a puncture of the trachea, profuse bleeding, damage to the laryngeal nerve, phlebitis of the veins, occurrence. It is also possible to enter the infection if there is insufficient sterility of the operating surface and syringe for puncture.

But the probability of any complications is minimal and depends only on the professionalism of the doctor conducting the procedure. If the puncture is performed correctly, then it itself can not cause any unpleasant consequences.
