The Aqueduct of Kamares

The aqueduct is a system for supplying water to a city or specific objects. Usually an aqueduct is built in the form of a bridge to hold pipes over the gaps, rivers and other areas of concern for the pipeline.

History and modernity

Today in the city of Larnaca we can see the Aqueduct of Kamares - one of the attractions of this city and quite once a useful and working structure. The aqueduct was built in 1746-1747 by the order of the then Governor of Cyprus Abu Bekirom Pasha who wanted to win the respect and love of the inhabitants of Larnaka: there were no wells or other sources of water nearby and the townspeople were forced to deliver water from sources located a couple of kilometers from Larnaka .

Years and centuries passed, the city was built, increased, and in the end it turned out that the aqueduct was in the middle of one of the districts of the city, although at one time was beyond its borders at all. In this regard, now the city authorities are trying to stop any construction in the district of the aqueduct and turn this area into a place for tourist walks. Not far from here is located the Larnaca Salt Lake , on which fly pink flamingos.

Unfortunately, to the present day the aqueduct has reached a damaged state, but the government regularly carries out repairs and is guarding the facility, which will allow them to admire it for many more years.

How to get to Kamares Aqueduct?

There is an aqueduct is not in the center of the city and directly to it public transport does not go (if you go on it, you have to walk for about 20 minutes). If you stay in one of the hotels in Larnaca for at least a couple of days, we recommend renting a car for convenient transportation around the city.
